If some Vesuvius were to erupt today, preserving
a memory of we two in ash and stone,
this is how I’d want us to be found:
as we are now, not holding hands, nor gazing at each other,
but seated side by side, backs to the wall,
our bodies turned to face the outside world.
For therein lies the soul of this alliance of ours,
the true picture of our unspoken affection:
two people facing away from each other,
not out of hatred, or disdain, or pride,
but instead trust and honour and a sturdy love
that keeps us close, as comrades, guarding each other’s flanks.
And as you and I walk through the world
like a mynah pair, keeping each other covered,
I wonder if your lips ever purse in amazement
at the fortunes that birthed us as friends;
for my part, I’m gladdened, again and again,
by the miracle of you on my side.
